Umno asks for Muhyiddin’s resignation, party MPs want President to step down

Umno has urged Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to resign due to the perceived failures over several pertinent issues.

This is to allow a new Prime Minister to be appointed in the interim said its President Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi noting that the decision was based on seven main failures of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government.

“To fulfill the unanimous mandate of the PAU 2020 delegates and based on the seven failures of the government to meet the aspirations of the people, the period to support Muhyiddin was withdrawn and ended immediately,” he said after the Umno Supreme Council (SC) virtual meeting last night.

“Therefore, Umno is urging Muhyiddin to step down respectfully so that a new prime minister can be appointed for a limited period.

“The new prime minister will only focus on efforts to help the people during the pandemic, addressing the Covid-19 virus through an inclusive approach and ensuring that the vaccination process can be expedited.

“After herd immunity is achieved, the new prime minister must advise the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to return the mandate to the people so that the 15th general election can be held,” said Ahmad Zahid in a statement.

He also said that Umno would neither nominate nor cooperate with PKR President Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“The Supreme Council meeting tonight also reaffirmed its stance as decided in the 2020 General Assembly which is to not provide any support in nominating Anwar to be the prime minister or a government that is led by DAP and Pakatan Harapan.”

Last night’s decision came less than 12 hours after Muhyiddin announced the appointments of Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob as the new Deputy Prime Minister and Umno senior leader Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein as the Senior Foreign Minister.

In another development, Umno SC member Datuk Seri Zahidi Zainul Abidin has revealed that 30 Umno Members of Parliaments (MPs) including those with the status of Minister and Deputy Minister, unanimously agree that its president must step down following several controversies involving him, in addition to facing corruption cases in courts.

“Ahmad Zahid suggested that Umno MPs, Ministers and Deputy Ministers resign from and withdraw their support for the government.

“So we discussed with the MPs, if we resign, will our party gain any benefit? If Ahmad Zahid resigns, we would gain benefits.

“If we resign, first of all, we’ll not have allocations anymore and the officers that we have appointed would also need to resign. Secondly, we’ll have to face the general election (GE)-15 as the opposition and Umno has never faced the GE as the opposition, never,” he was quoted by Astro AWANI as saying.

Zahidi added that the Umno President will be favourably viewed as ‘big-hearted’ if he resigns like some former Umno leaders previously.

He said this would restore the people’s hopes and support for the party ahead of the 15th GE.
