EVEN A LICENSED HOUSE IS DEMOLISHED BY ISRAEL

Owners insist they filled all necessary papers and met all legal requirements, yet the Israeli occupation authorities went ahead with the demolition

Mohammad Joudeh, a Palestinian living in the Beit Safafa neighbourhood of East Jerusalem, had obtained all the papers needed to build his house. However, on Wednesday 25 May, Israeli troops accompanied two bulldozers and demolished his house amid scuffling with him and others from the family.

At least 11 people live in the house, which turned into rubble in less than an hour. Mohammad’s mother said he applied for all the permits required and he had just paid NIS 150,000 (approximately $40,000 US dollars) and all was legally correct.

She yelled at the police and the rest of the troops who took Mohammad away without giving him a chance to check with his lawyer or to bring the papers that prove he had licensed his house.

Another member of the family said they were not alerted by the Israeli authorities at all. She was at school to pick up her child and when she returned home, she saw the house had already turned into rubble. “May Almighty God helps us,” she said.
