Egypt banned Aidilfitri celebrations to curb the increase in the spread of COVID-19 cases.

Not only that, the country has also closed all malls and restaurant.

Prime Minister, Mostafa Madbouli said Egypt had recorded nearly 232,000 positive cases with more than 13,000 deaths.

He said Egypt is currently facing a third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic and urges citizens to adhere to health guidelines and immediately register for the vaccine.

“We are responsible not only to ourselves, but our families, we are now at a critical stage” Mostafa said.

The closure order starts at 9pm today until May 21.

Beaches, parks and recreational facilities will be closed during the five day holiday and any organization of concerts or large-scale events such as weddings will not be allowed.

However, Mostafa said Muslims are allowed to perform Aidilfitri prayers at selected mosques.
