Budget 2021 Passed Despite Strong Opposition

Budget 2021 is finally passed in the final approval stage in the Dewan Rakyat via en bloc vote with 111 Members of Parliament (MPs) in favour, representing a simple majority.

The razor-thin margin of victory was achieved when 111 MPs voted in favour, 108 MPs against and one MP absent out of the 220 members.

With the passing of Budget 2021, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has retained confidence in the Parliament, avoiding a collapse and subsequent snap elections.

Budget 2021 or the Supply Bill 2021 will now head to the Dewan Negara (Senate), where it will be debated before it gets the final seal of approval.

Talks of lawmakers rejecting the bill had recently engulfed the nation when both Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Tan Sri Tengku Razaleigh rallied for other MPs to reject the bill.

The move however failed.

Budget 2021 is currently the biggest in the country’s history at RM322.5bil, taking into consideration the economic and social impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Stay tuned for more updates.
